Protect SC Business

We need to protect South Carolina’s business climate from lawsuit abuse.

The South Carolina business climate is under assault by TV Lawyers.

The TV Lawyers are spending $20 Million a year on cable and broadcast television ads in South Carolina. That’s $20 Million a year they are spending encouraging people to file lawsuits against businesses.

The national trend has been that the money spent on TV ads by lawyers doubles every 4 years.

These same lawyers dominate the Yellow Pages and phone books with their ads. Their overall advertising campaign is estimated to be about $35 million a year in this state.

There has been a slight decrease in the number of criminal and Family Court cases in South Carolina, but civil cases have increased by 33,000 since 2006.

North Carolina has 9.2 million residents. South Carolina has 4.5 million residents but both states had about 60,000 workers’ comp claims filed last year.

The SC Workers’ Compensation Commission website states one of the objectives of the system is to: “minimize payment of fees to lawyers and witnesses as well as time-consuming trials and court appeals.”

The Workers’ Compensation Commission approves about 10,000 attorney fee petitions a year. Is that minimizing the payment of attorneys’ fees?

The South Carolina Coalition for Lawsuit Reform (SCCLR) serves as the united voice for the business community on tort and workers' compensation issues; coordinating lobbying, legal, grassroots and public relations activities.
